The Green Ribbon campaign

For many years now the green ribbon has been the international symbol for mental health and suicide awareness. Suicide is one of the largest killers of young males in Ireland, surpassing that of the many other known killers reported on daily, yet it does not get the airtime and awareness that it should. It often gets brushed under the carpet, and not talked about. Inter7s.com has decided to focus its charity and local giving resources on creating awareness of this killer, its prevention and to make it normal to talk about our feelings with each other without feeling you are annoying, or being a burden to others.

In conjunction with our partners, we are embarking on the ‘Inter7s Green Ribbon Campaign’, a multifaceted project that will promote awareness to our own members, our teams, and beyond. We will provide access to information, training and support to a MHO (Mental Health Officer) that will be a requirement for each team in our leagues. Our club jerseys will ALL have the green ribbon with an emergency text line on. The green ribbon and text number will be put in front of the faces of all that play and follow us on our social media pages. We also plan to give input into other national and international projects, including the seeking of policy changes, in order to ensure that this topic is kept to the front, that this becomes a daily conversation, and most importantly, any person seeking help knows where to go.

So far this year we have employed a league local area officer, established a register of team MHOs, created, and pushed out, the visible green ribbon on all our materials including prizes, shirts, banners at venues and more. A strategy that we hope to push across Ireland, and maybe even further afield. We have other projects and concepts aligning with this, so please keep your eyes peeled for more information in the near future.

MHO - Mental Health Officer

This season (Spring 2022) we have launched the ‘inter7s Green Ribbon Campaign’. Without getting involved in the ‘delivery’ of mental health services, we do want to promote and support our members on the topic of Mental Health and Suicide Awareness, in the least onerous way possible, both for our members and the club.

For this reason, we request that each team puts forward an MHO, who will be available to any team member that seeks help, and also those that don’t, but clearly need it. The MHO role will automatically fall to the first captain, but we are setting up a register so that can be changed as and when the team wish, to another person.

The role of the MHO is not heavy, and in fact is mostly being an ongoing signpost to others on the team, and a periodic vessel through which we can issue literature and information to them. We will also set up a few courses and short talks, where the MHO can learn the basics of ‘how to’, ‘when to’ and ‘where to’.

It is crucial that we support our members, and we ask you to join us on this journey.
